Zola was rescued as a kitten from a severe hoarding situation and faced multiple health challenges early in life. Her recovery required patience, routine, and respect for her boundaries.

Zola teaches an important lesson: connection does not always look the same. Children learn to observe cues, respect space, and understand different personalities.

Canelo is a senior horse who arrived at the ranch after years of isolation and physical strain. Despite his past, he has an incredibly calm and reassuring presence.

Spending time near Canelo often helps children slow down, regulate emotions, and feel grounded.
His quiet strength makes him a powerful teacher without saying a word.

Dolly was previously part of an agricultural science program before making her debut at Second Chance Ranch. She was not a solid fit for the Ag program as she was skittish and “feral”; she had been tormented by some of the students and isolated from her kind for the entire year before Grace brought her home.

She and Canelo formed an instant bond, and before long Dolly saw herself as part of the herd.
She’s now the leader of her small flock (3 sheep
and 1 goat) and enjoys hopping around the pastures and hanging out with “her” horses.

With absolutely no shortage of painfully adorable photos ever since she was 5 pounds, Stella, AKA ‘Bella’, ‘Bear’, ‘Piglet’, ‘Piggy-paggle’, and many others, is a huge fan of getting her way, exploring the ranch, kitty cuddles, and eating her way through the day. She now weighs 95 pounds.

Grace picked up Stella from a small ranch in Fallon, NV at a very young 4 weeks old. As piglets typically don’t leave their mothers until 6-8 weeks, Grace
and Trevor had their hands full supplementing Stella’s meals with goat milk and baby cereal
and feeding her every 3-4 hours for her first few weeks on the ranch.

She lives quite the life and may go inside and outside as she pleases. Her favorite resting spot
is her dog bed/blanket fort. She eats pig pellets, veggies, some fruit, and coconut flakes as a treat. Despite a well balanced diet, she can’t seem to resist the occasional duck and goose dropping.

the pastures.

Frank and Jesse James
2.5 years old

A ranch favorite, the steers, Frank (red) and Jesse (horns), are half brothers and half highland cattle (they’re also mini, comparatively). They are the only animals on the ranch in which Grace and Trevor elected to pay for; while Frank and Jesse would have one day ended up on a dinner plate, Grace and Trevor are strictly keeping them as friends, not food.

These boys are friendly indeed, although they mostly prefer to keep to themselves. They get along swimmingly with all other ranch animals, and they won’t be shy to approach you if you’re carrying any amount of hay. Frank is slightly more reserved while Jesse leaves it all out there for everyone to see.

First thing’s first: Mister Cocoa is a huge lover. His previous owner had every intention for him to be her main riding horse until life had other plans. Cocoa ended up on his own in expansive desert-like terrain in Calaveras County, CA. Upon hearing about his lack of companionship (and hearty physique), Grace and Trevor took Cocoa in with open arms.

Likely utilized as a working horse and trained by cowboys in his hay day, Cocoa’s demeanor when he joined the ranch can be described as fairly jumpy, cautious, and highly alert. He was immediately responsive to any new stimulus Grace and Trevor introduced to him.

Not too long after he joined the ranks was he kicked in the horn by one of the larger horses. Ouch. Thankfully, the local big animal vet helped Grace and Trevor nurse him back to optimal health.
His horn remains short and stubby but it continues to grow little by little.

With around 40+ koi swimming about, they receive no shortage of fish food and you might even mistake several of them for small whales. The pond has two bubblers and therefore doesn’t feeeze in the cold winter months. The koi, however, go into a state of torpor, or hibernation lite.

In fact, Tigger survived a C-section and can no longer bear lambs at all. You can see the scar is identifiable by a long dark splotch on part of her wool near her hind leg.

Grayson, ‘the old gray mare’, is a sweet and gentle soul. Previously trained in barrel racing and team roping, she is crystal clear on how to behave with
a rider on top of her. She was in a trailer accident several years ago and so she has a hitch in her gait, but this doesn’t stop her from light riding including trail riding.

Grace took her to the vet to find out that she had
a broken leg; the X-rays also showed that she was suffering from metal toxicity as her abdomen was perforated with nails and screws she must have ingested at her previous home. Grace left the vet without Daisy that day.
